Myth #3: Hospice Hastens Death

This myth can be particularly hard to shake. Some worry that hospice care somehow speeds up

the dying process, perhaps through heavy sedation or withholding basic needs. The opposite is

true. Hospice focuses on alleviating pain and discomfort—whether physical, emotional, or

spiritual—without hastening or prolonging death. Medications are used thoughtfully to ease

suffering, not to “knock out” patients. Nutrition, hydration, and personal care continue as long as

they align with the patient’s wishes and condition. Hospice doesn’t dictate the end; it respects the

natural course of life.
